Variational Approach to the Energy Spectra of Heavy Mesons

PHYS400 senior research project — Gaussian Expansion Method applied to charmonium and bottomonium mass spectra using the Cornell potential.

This project implements a high-precision variational framework to compute mass spectra, wavefunctions, and physical observables for heavy quarkonia (charmonium and bottomonium) and other mesons.

The method uses the Gaussian Expansion Method (GEM) to solve the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation with the Cornell potential (V(r)=κ/r+σrV(r) = -\kappa/r + \sigma r), predicting energy levels and decay metrics with excellent agreement with experimental Particle Data Group (PDG) measurements.
